How to Write IGNOU Assignments That Score Good Marks

Follow these proven tips to structure your answers properly, avoid common mistakes, and submit assignments that get the marks you deserve.

📖

Read the Question Carefully

Before writing a single word, read each question 2-3 times. Identify what it’s really asking — is it “Discuss,” “Explain,” “Compare,” or “Critically Analyse”? Each keyword demands a different answer structure. Highlight the key terms and make sure your answer addresses every part of the question.

📐

Follow the Word Limit

IGNOU assignments typically have three sections. Section A has long answers (about 500 words each), Section B has medium answers (about 250 words), and Section C has short answers (about 100 words). Sticking to these limits shows the evaluator that you can be concise and focused.

🔗

Use IGNOU Study Material

Your primary source should be IGNOU’s own study material (available on eGyanKosh). Evaluators check if your answers align with the official course content. Use the Block structure provided in your study material to organize your answers. Supplement with reference books only when needed.

✏️

Structure Your Answers

Start with a brief introduction (2-3 lines), then write the main body with clear headings and subheadings, and end with a short conclusion. Use numbered points where appropriate. A well-structured answer always scores better than a wall of unformatted text.

⚠️

Avoid Copy-Paste (Plagiarism)

IGNOU checks for plagiarism. Copying directly from study material, websites, or other students’ assignments can lead to zero marks or even debarment. Always write in your own words. If you use a reference, cite it properly. A shorter original answer beats a long copied one every time.

🎯

Include Examples & Diagrams

Wherever possible, add real-world examples, case studies, diagrams, flowcharts, or tables to your answers. For subjects like Management, Psychology, or Commerce, practical examples show the evaluator you truly understand the concept — not just memorized it.

IGNOU Assignment Study Guides — Programme Wise

Use these reference materials to understand how each topic should be approached, learn the expected answer structure, and prepare your own original answers. Available for all major IGNOU programmes.

📌 Study Reference Only: These guides are meant to help you understand concepts and answer patterns. You must write your own original assignments for submission. Submitting someone else’s work violates IGNOU’s academic integrity policy.

IGNOU Assignment Formatting & Submission Guide

Many students lose marks not because of bad answers, but because of wrong formatting. Whether you’re preparing a handwritten assignment or a typed one, here’s everything about paper type, handwriting, cover page, and submission rules.

📝 Paper Type & Handwriting Rules

Paper: Use A4 size ruled paper (foolscap paper). Most IGNOU study centres accept standard A4 ruled sheets. Some centres also accept white A4 paper with handwritten content.

Handwriting: Write neatly in blue or black ink only. Leave margins on the left side (about 1 inch). Avoid cutting and overwriting — if you make a mistake, draw a single line through it and continue.

Typed Assignments: Some programmes (MBA, MCA) allow typed assignments. Use 12pt Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing, and proper page numbering. Check with your study centre first.

One-sided: Write on only one side of each page.

📋 Cover Page Format

Every assignment must have a cover page with these details:

Course Title: e.g., English Communication (BEGAE-182)

Course Code: e.g., BEGAE-182

Assignment Code: (from assignment question paper)

Student Name: Full name as per IGNOU records

Enrollment Number: Your 9-digit enrollment number

Programme: e.g., BAG, MBA, MCA

Study Centre Code: e.g., 29056

Regional Centre: e.g., RC Delhi-2

Session: January 2025 or July 2025

Date of Submission: The date you submit

Missing any detail can delay evaluation or lead to rejection.

📤 How to Submit Your Assignment

At Study Centre: Most assignments are submitted in person at your assigned IGNOU study centre. Get a receipt with date and centre stamp — keep this safe as proof.

Online Submission: Some programmes now allow online submission through IGNOU’s portal. Check if your programme supports this.

Keep a Copy: Always keep a photocopy or photo of your complete assignment before submitting. If it gets lost, you’ll need to resubmit.

❌ Common Mistakes to Avoid

Wrong assignment code — Check the session and year carefully

Missing questions — Answer ALL questions from ALL sections

No page numbers — Number every page in sequence

Wrong study centre — Submit only at your assigned centre

Late submission — No extensions. Miss the deadline and it won’t be evaluated

Stapling all subjects together — Submit each subject separately

Frequently Asked Questions — IGNOU Assignments

Where can I download IGNOU assignment question papers? +
IGNOU publishes assignment question papers on their official assignment portal at webservices.ignou.ac.in/assignments. Select your programme and session to download the PDF. New questions are typically released within 2-4 weeks after each session starts (January and July).
What type of paper should I use for handwritten IGNOU assignments? +
Use A4 size ruled paper (also called foolscap paper). Write on one side only, using blue or black ink. Leave a margin of about 1 inch on the left side. Standard A4 ruled paper from any stationery shop works fine — you don’t need special IGNOU paper.
What is the last date to submit IGNOU assignments? +
For January session: 30th June (for June TEE) or 30th September (for December TEE). For July session: 31st December (for December TEE) or 31st March (for June TEE). Always verify exact dates from the official IGNOU website as they can change.
Can I type my IGNOU assignment instead of handwriting it? +
It depends on your programme. MBA and MCA typically accept typed assignments. Most undergraduate programmes require handwritten submissions. Check with your study centre coordinator before submitting a typed assignment. If allowed, use 12pt Times New Roman with 1.5 spacing.
How are IGNOU assignment marks calculated? +
IGNOU assignments carry 30% weightage in your final grade for most programmes. The remaining 70% comes from the Term End Examination. You need minimum 40% in assignments and 40% in TEE separately to pass a course.
What if my assignment result shows “Not Received”? +
“Not Received” means IGNOU’s system doesn’t have a record of your submission. Contact your study centre with your submission receipt. If you don’t have a receipt, you may need to resubmit. This is why keeping a photocopy and collecting a stamped receipt is critical.
Can I buy pre-written assignments and submit them? +
No — and we strongly advise against it. Submitting someone else’s work violates IGNOU’s academic integrity policy. IGNOU has plagiarism detection systems and you risk zero marks or even debarment. Use study reference materials to understand concepts, then write your own answers in your own words. That’s exactly what our study guides are designed for — to help you understand, not to be submitted directly.
